Making Extra Money is as Easy as 1, 2, 3

A quick Google search of “how to make extra money” will yield over 423,000,000 results. While this is obviously a wealth of information, the problem I’ve found is that most of the links take you to sites/posts that list a certain number of ways to bring in extra cash. They’re detailed and creative, yes. But are they a general mold to help bolster your motivation to jump on the make extra cash bandwagon? Not necessarily.

From my personal experience with bringing in extra cash, it really boils down to the three ideas listed below. Once you put these in place, you’ll be well prepared to set course on your own bottom line-boosting adventure. As someone who’s had a particularly interesting financial past, I honed the skill of bringing in extra cash first as a necessity and now as a passion.

How to Make Extra Money

Set realistic expectations

The premise of this post is making extra money–it’s not about your full-time work/responsibilities. Therefore, be realistic about your ability to devote the extra time to bringing in more cash. Know your priorities; if they don’t align with your wish to boost the bottom line, you may be doomed to fail before you even get started. Once you take the plunge, know your limits. Bringing in extra cash is fantastic but not if it’s detrimental to your day job, relationships, and/or sanity.

Think outside the box

The sky is the limit for ways to make extra money. Once you figure out the logistical issues and have a clear vision for your needs, desires, and talents, you can literally find hundreds of ways to make money. Harness your passion and set sail; when you make the commitment to do this, you are the champion of your own success. Knock down those barriers and set yourself up for future financial success. Believe in yourself and don’t stop improving your efforts.

Suck it up, Princess

As I mentioned in my post about what running the Boston Marathon taught me about personal finance, this is all about doing it. Making a true effort to make more money requires an intense work ethic. It also requires sacrifice, excellent time management, and a keen sense of self. However, at the end of the day, it’s almost always worth it to increase your overall enjoyment (by reducing stress related to money) and your financial security. So, what are you waiting for? Get out there an boost that bottom line today!

  1. I do heaps to make extra money (including blogging about it myself, lol), but you are so right. So much of the info out there is ways to do it, but not always practical advice. Thanks for your tips. :)

  2. Kind of a boring way, but I just work overtime at my current job. I can't remember the last day I had off where I didn't get called for overtime. I don't work every day that I have off, but I do try to get one a week in.

  3. Number 1 is the most important. You have to find a balance for you.I prefer if that extra money comes in a passive form. In the future, I would like to do more investing, like stocks, rental properties and other passive forms of income. I don't do much now besides work optional overtime and I don't like it much. I know I should work extra hard now so that I can invest in those passive forms of income but…. maybe I have to focus more on number 3 and just suck it up and do it :) Number 2 is the one I struggle with the most, I brainstorm ever so often about ways I could start a side hustle but nothing that sets me on fire or seems possible tends to come to me. I'm trying to keep my eyes open though as you never know when something will hit you.

  4. The title of this post is correct. Making extra money is as easy as 1, 2, 3. What's not so easy is finding the right niche that will serve as a good match for the individual seeking to make extra money. It's not a question of paying money to set one up a small business, and hoping that the money appears within a couple of weeks. In the beginning, it takes many long hours and a lot of hard effort just to stay afloat. However, the long hours and hard effort never cease even after you start making extra cash. Earning extra money is serious business.

  5. You're welcome! And I agree….it's not always practical advice floating out there…..what I tried to do in this post is highlight that it CAN be done. I've made lots of extra cash doing some of the most random things and most of the time enjoying the work, too!

  6. Not boring at all! Often people forget to look at the options right in front of them when it comes to making extra cash. Instead of over-thinking it, it can be as simple as taking on overtime!

  7. I dream of the day when I have multiple investment properties to manage! And yes, you never really know what could pop up–in my experience, sometimes the best things happen when you least expect them to!

  8. Making extra money certainly doesn't happen by itself. Earlier this year, I was doing great about finding "side hustles", from surveys to delivering flowers on v-day, and the extra income was fantastic.Lately, I haven't spent as much time out looking.. and as a result, nothing has come to me. I need to get back on that train, no doubt.

  9. So true! It's a lot of work but I've found it's often worth it at least in the short-term. I like to keep my side gigs varied so I'm always doing something interesting–that way, burnout is easier to avoid :)
