Relocating to a new city is a serious task, which is why so many people make expensive mistakes when preparing for it.
Here are some of the most common moving mistakes to help you stay organized when moving, while keeping the costs down…
Not Timing Your Move
A lot of people don’t realize that their moving experience can be a lot of cheaper if they time it. By avoiding moving in the summer, end, beginning or exactly middle of the month are times you will be able to save money and make your move less stressful.
Not Researching Self Storage Units
When you have to move to a new city such as Louisville, KY, you will need a self storage unit for storing your bigger belongings until you settle down and get things in place. This is why you need to research beforehand so that you are able to find cheap storage.
Not Calling the Mover on Time
If you start off early with the whole moving process, you’ll not only eliminate stress but will also be able to save some money. So how soon should you call your mover? If you’re moving during crunch periods then give some more time. Ideally, you should plan two months in advance, but most movers are fine with a two weeks notice.
Not Hiring a Moving Company
If and when you plan to move yourself then there are many different things to take care of such as hiring the truck, paying its insurance (and for gas), hiring moving labor, etc. If you calculate all of these costs and you’ll come to know that hiring a moving company is a lot more cheaper than doing it yourself.
Not Getting Multiple Quotes
Since different moving companies offer different pricing, you should get multiple quotes in order to avoid high charges. There are many good, professional moving companies out there to choose from, so be wise. Also, keep in mind that the lowest quote isn’t always the best choice.
Not Researching the Movers Well
Don’t make the mistake of hiring a moving company randomly. Be smart and do your homework first. Use the BBB database to learn more about the moving company and if possible, also check on their “mover’s license” with United States Department of Transportation.
In conclusion, the above cost- saving mistakes can be easily avoided – as long as you put in some time and effort preparation.

ummm… two years in advance? woah.
Hahaha…nice catch! How about two months?? Edited…
I have moved a lot in the past. One year I think I moved three times. I got pretty good at downsizing. I have to say I haven't found moving that bad. I have done a lot myself and just hired a mover for the really big stuff. It does take time to pack and stuff though so it does help to plan in advance.

I agree–I actually like to move because I love setting up the new place/decorating, and I've moved around a bunch. Three times in one year is impressive though!
