Where My Goals At: 2013 Q1 Recap

Now that we’re knee-deep into the fourth month of the year, I’ve noticed an interesting yet all too common phenomenon: The gyms are emptier, people are posting less and less about their annual goals and there’s virtually no mention of new year’s resolutions made in everyday conversation.

Alas, it seems as if the day-to-day of 2013 has already derailed the best laid intentions and plans for some of us.

I’ll admit that some of my goals are already slipping, but I know if I post about it, I’m holding myself accountable to the plan I set a few months ago. Putting this out here for all of you to read is a great reminder of what I’ve accomplished and where I need to get my rear in gear.

My 2013 Financial, Personal and Household Goals:

2013 Financial, Personal and Household Goals

Financial Goals:

  • Save $1,200/month in long-term savings: CHECK. I’m doing pretty well with this goal, having saved $3,000 in January, $1,310 in February and $2,500 in March.
  • Double miscellaneous monthly income: CHECK. I’m blowing this out of the water right now, but I’m still remaining a bit skeptical as you never know just how variable online income can be. My original goal was to make $800/month. Considering March’s monster sum of $10,000, I think I’m doing alright! :)
  • Have at least one month where extra income is $1K+  CHECK. So far, every single month has been well over $1K. Here’s to hoping this continues!
  • Fully fund trips to Kauai and Dubai. CHECK. Dubai was a phenomenal trip and I’ll have a photo recap soon! Kauai is proving to be much more difficult to schedule due to my BF’s work schedule, so I’m not quite sure what will happen with this goal but at least all the money is saved for it.

Personal Goals:

  • Run at least 30 miles/week. FAIL. I’ve been running as much as I can, but I’m still plagued with some nagging injuries that have prevented any increase in mileage just yet. I will be getting my bike tuned this week, so I anticipate the cross training will help get my legs in gear (pun intended..haha!).
  • Complete another ultra marathon. POSTPONED. Too many injuries, too much risk right now. However, tomorrow I’m signing up for the Disney Dopey Challenge for January 2014– 48.6 miles in 4 days!
  • Complete Q&A a day project. FAIL. I haven’t written a single day’s entry…hoping to pick right back up with this ASAP.
  • Improve blog stats. CHECK. There have been steady increases to , , , and link/SEO efforts. So far, so good.
  • Cook my way through The Joy of Cooking. IN PROGRESS. I’ve missed the last 3 weeks due to travel and crazy schedules, but I already have a meal plan for this week. I will be cooking the bajesus out of my kitchen…haha.
  • Write my business plan. AMENDED. I’m already operating my own freelancing business–now I need to work on expanding my offerings and efforts.

Household Goals

  • Complete home office renovation. IN PROGRESS. There’s no excuse for why this is lingering except for laziness. I just need to get a new office chair and hang a shelf…duh.
  • Cook at least 4 dinners/week. CHECK. Even though I missed a few weeks with the Joy of Cooking, I’m still doing well with cutting back on the dinners out. I’ve become pretty creative with using what’s in the fridge to cook up something at least somewhat edible!
  • Complete kitchen renovation. POSTPONED. In the interest of other financial goals and needed house repairs, I’m going to table this goal. Unless I find a heck of a deal somewhere, I don’t see this happening in 2013. I might just settle for adding a nice table/shelving unit in the kitchen so we at least have some extra storage.

How are you doing with your 2013 goals?

  1. You are rocking your goals! I felt guilty reading your post because I desperately need to do a recap on my goals too :)

  2. Funny, how I have seen the same exact thing. :) It looks like, overall, you're doing very well with your goals – especially in the income department. We did not have very many this year, other than to be able to get back to throwing money at retirement and that looks very good so far. I think next year that our goal will be able to max out our SEP's which will be a huge step for us.

    • Thanks! It's been a phenomenal year so far with money but I'm skeptical that it will last…something I'm working on!

Maxing out the SEP is a awesome goal!

    • Haha…quite a bit of hard work and some fortunate timing with ad income! I won't hit nearly that number this month, but I'm OK with that :)

  3. Wow excellent job, especially with the income!! Yes too often we forget what we set out to do in Jan. I only had one resolution: to not get any kind of parking ticket in 2013. So far so good. Believe me it's harder than it sounds. Looking forward to hearing about the trip!

  4. Great job! My wife, myself, and my daughter have been passing sickness back and forth literally all year, so my goals for this year are failing miserably.

  5. Rest assured, this is almost why I blog – still tracking my goals and talking about them monthly. Not all are going great, but they aren't forgotten! Sadly commentluv doesn't go back far enough, but I posted about them on 29 Mar.

    • I love it–that's why I started this blog in the first place!!

It's a question and answer for every day of the year for 5 years in one journal so you can see how your responses to the same questions change over the course of the 5 years. It's pretty awesome! You can just search for Q & A a day on Amazon.

    • Thanks! Hmm…meal kits, eh? I'm intrigued! Have you written any posts or parts of posts about these? And yes, cooking from scratch is my ideal but I have a looooong way to go :)

  7. Wow, I can't believe you made $10,000 in miscellaneous income in March! That's awesome!!

How do you fit 30 miles/week of running in? Is that 2-3 longer runs or several shorter runs?

I think this might be harder since you're cooking for two, but I can usually get through the whole week with only cooking 2-3 dinners and eating the leftovers the other night. That makes life so much easier! I'm definitely a fan of adding simple extra shelving units – they make a HUGE difference!

    • Same here! When I tallied up the spreadsheet, I nearly fell out of my chair :)

When I'm back at that level, I do 2-3 shorter runs of ~5-8 miles each and then one long run on the weekend. Right now I'm around 15-20 which is all 3-5 milers until my knee is completely healed.

I love the idea of leftovers…gotta get the BF on board :)

  14. Great job with your goals! We've fully funded our big summer vacation – a Disney Cruise, so I'm very happy there. The blog is continuing to grow, although I wish it was growing faster. Something I continue to work at. :) Looking forward to seeing the Dubai pictures. I love to travel, but have never been there. Heard it's beautiful and interested in hearing about your experience!

    • Thank you! That's awesome about your vacation…well done on pre-planning and funding it!

Yeah, blog growth is a mysterious process to me. One day it's all gangbusters and the next it's crickets. I just shrug and move on while hoping my organic approach to growth wins out in the end!

Post will be up before Monday!! :)

  17. You are definitely exceeding your financial goals. I am super impressed with last months $10,000 extra income. You need to do a post breaking down what you did. (or maybe just email me ;) Good luck with everything else!
