Starting a business is an exciting yet overwhelming time. When you’re just starting out, there are some important decisions you need to make.
As with any financial decision, a solid foundation for your business bodes well for future success. Ensure you’re setting your business—and yourself—up for success from the beginning by taking care of the following:

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Nowhere is this phrase more applicable than during the process of starting your own business. You might have years of industry experience and a fantastic network, but if you’re not setting and creating goals for your business, you may be doomed from the start.
I’m a huge fan of setting goals, and I set some of my own as I ventured into the world of self-employment. It took months of behind-the-scenes planning to make the leap but I’m so happy I did! Speaking of planning, a business plan should go hand-in-hand with the business goals you set. If you need help with defining/recording your goals, check out resources such as the Small Business Association or talk to friends and colleagues who have successfully started their own businesses.
Business Banking
A crucial step in getting your business started is to set up a separate business banking account. You’ll want to research your options, but there are many perks to using an online institution that can streamline your business banking needs.
Insurance
From liability to property insurance, there’s a myriad of choices and considerations to properly protect your new business. As you’re assessing your needs and choosing policies, you might also want to consider income protection insurance as you’re now your own self’s sole provider.
Focus on the Positives
As you move along with your planning and beyond, don’t forget about the power of a positive outlook. There will be plenty of challenging times ahead, but you can navigate them a bit easier if you’re positive and have done the hard work up front. As you grow as a business owner and begin to set even loftier goals, the small successes you earn along the way will help pave the future possibility of even larger wins down the road!
A lot of people forget to treat a business like a business. They want to have the money from a company but fail to have a goal and strategy in place. Get a name, accounts and do business. The one thing I must say I missed up on is not getting insurance.
