Castles of Ireland

First, thank you all for the birthday wishes! I had a wonderful day filled with running, eating (haha) and MAD MEN. It really couldn’t have been better!

While speaking with my grandmother, I realized that our trip to Ireland is just over a month away and we should have some sort of plan for how we want to spend our time there. In an effort to get my arse in gear about planning our trip, I’m going to devote a few posts to its various components. First up are the various castles we’ll be sleeping in.

Like the incredible deal I found for my trip to Greece last fall, I again sought out opportunities to save money by using TravelZoo. After a few weeks of searching, I found and booked a package that includes the round-trip flight from Boston to Dublin, a car rental for 6 days (automatic transmission–I don’t think I’d fare well with standard while driving on the opposite side of the road!), full breakfasts each day, and 6 nights accommodation in the following castles for $1,001 each (there are also a few extras such as a Waterford Crystal tour included as well).

Including taxes and fees, the cost was $1,125.81 each. Not too shabby for a week’s worth of castle-hopping!  The best part is that I’ve already paid for the entire trip (I paid for my grandmother because it’s my retirement gift to her) and I’ve saved $1K for spending money.

The Castles of Ireland:

Cabra Castle Hotel
Kilronan Castle Estate & Spa
Kinnitty Castle
Fitzpatrick Castle

Needless to say, I’m very excited to get there and see these places in person!!

What are some must-see places in Ireland that we shouldn’t miss?

  1. That does sound like a good price for your vacation package. These are beautiful-looking castles, and they should certainly make of a wonderful trip. Have a safe trip, and an awesome vacation.

  3. I don't know where exactly in Ireland you'll be, but if you're within driving distance of Newgrange, you definitely need to get out there and take a tour. It is an amazing site. Try to see the whole site if you can.(It's fairly near Dublin.) If you're up near Galway, try to get out to the Portal Tomb. (The Portal Tomb is older than Newgrange, which is older than Stonehenge, to give you some perspective.)

  5. First of all and I am really sorry about this being late and all but I can't let it go undone.Happy Belated Birthday!! I already know you had an amazing weekend so that is awesome. That is one amazing deal you have found there. It's almost unbelievable to me for a trip to Ireland.I don't drink it but Ireland is the home of guinness, it's a pretty popular drink, at least here where I live. I think it would be pretty cool to tour the factory if they offer tours. I know nothing else about Ireland sadly :(

  6. Thank your for these recommendations! I think we'll be able to fit in Newgrange and I'll certainly look into options to get to Galway. I'm really not too sure where we'll be either yet..haha!

  7. Yeah, how crazy is that?! It was marketed as a castle tour of Ireland. Definitely do look into TravelZoo. I'm not paid by them to say this, but I love, love, looooove that site. The best deals are in their weekly Top 20 that comes out each Wednesday–that's where I found this, my Greece lodging package, and many others in the past 7 years or so.

  8. Thanks, Rafiki! It was a good birthday indeed :) The deal is all thanks to the beauty of the Top 20–I had to unsubscribe from the email list because I was becoming too addicted to/tempted by finding great vacation deals. I'll have to see about Guinness, but I'm not sure what my gram would think of that option…hahaha!
