BMW European Delivery Program Recap–Part One: The Welt

As promised, I’ll be posting full recaps about my European Delivery Program trip and Performance Center re-delivery. Up first is the Euro Delivery….

When I first decided that I was ready to purchase my beloved Bimmer, I had no doubt that I wanted to take advantage of all the special programs BMW had to offer. If I was going to plunk down this amount of cash on a car, I wanted to ensure I was getting far more than the physical vehicle–I wanted an experience that I’d remember for a long time.

And a long time, indeed. I’m certain that I’ll never forget this trip!

BMW European Delivery Program Logistics

The program is available to anyone age 18 and older who is purchasing or leasing a brand new BMW. In August, I met with my client advisor to choose my car and its options as well as to discuss potential travel dates. Due to multiple scheduling conflicts, I decided to push my actual delivery date out until November. Usually, you could have your date within 4-6 weeks of placing your order. I “met” my car on Friday, November 23, 2012.

After your car is ordered, you receive a crapload of paperwork to fill out including customs forms, insurance declarations, travel arrangements, etc. You also get your production number and online access code so you can travel along with the real-time production of your vehicle:

BMW Online Tracking Once the car logistics are out of the way, it’s time to book your travel arrangements. For anyone taking part in the European Delivery Program, you receive an automatic discount on the base price of the car–up to 7%. This is a built-in advantage that’s positioned to help you pay for the trip (aka a sales gimmick!). I of course got the 7% and then some. We also used Amex points to cover the entire cost of both of our round-trip flights–including all taxes & fees!  :)

I’ll talk more about the trip itself in a future post as this one is dedicated 100% to the Welt and all things cars.

Arriving at the BMW Welt

Once your paperwork is processed and production dates are confirmed, your delivery date is set. As I mentioned, mine was 11/23/12. I had a morning delivery time, so we were off to the Welt bright & early for an 8AM arrival:

BMW Welt European Delivery Program I’d  never been to Germany let alone the Welt before, so I was literally blown away by the amazing architecture of the building and the grounds that surrounded it. I instantly knew why tourists have the Welt listed as a “must-see” destination while in Munich.

BMW Welt European Delivery Program When we arrived, we were escorted up to the private buyers’ floor and reception area (BMW does VIP better than any other company I’ve ever personally experienced). I was introduced to my personal ambassador, finished up a bit more paperwork and was given my scheduled car presentation time. Afterwards, we were invited to relax, walk around and/or help ourselves to anything we wanted to eat or drink in the private lounge (all free of course) until it was time to see my car.

From where we were in the building, you could look directly down at the cars below. Some of them were even on rotating platforms and were spinning around in circles; taunting their new owners who were all patiently waiting around us.

Around 10AM, it was time to meet my ambassador and, more importantly, my car!! It definitely felt like I was in some sort of movie as he (I was so excited that I completely forget his name…oops!) guided us down this massive stairway and onto the platform where the new cars were sitting. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel as if I was floating as I giggled my way down the stairs…

BMW Welt European Delivery Program Once I was on the platform, I made a mad dash to my car; leaving my ambassador and BF in stitches as they cracked up over how excited I was. I wasted no time in whipping the car door open and jumping inside. :)

BMW Welt European Delivery Program After I finally calmed down enough to listen to him, my ambassador spent the next hour or so going over every single feature of my car, helped me set all of the seat/mirror memory settings, showed me how to use the navigation system, etc. If you’re a Peanuts fan, you’ll understand why I describe this time as nothing but Charlie Brown’s teacher’s dialogue: “Whomp, whomp, whomp; wah, wah, wah.”

After the feature briefing, it was time to drive my car–inside the building. In the pictures below, you’ll see the gray area painted on the floor. That’s the victory lap. All new owners who take delivery of their vehicle in the Welt get to drive around the entire circle and down the ramp, out of the building. I took two laps. :)

BMW Welt European Delivery Program BMW Welt European Delivery Program After all of the car excitement, the day wasn’t even close to being finished. We parked the car out front of the building then came back inside for a 2-hour factory tour (sadly, no photos because cameras aren’t allowed inside). I was in awe (and a bit scared of) the robotics they use to manufacture these cars. They almost look human!

After the tour, we had lunch in the buyer’s lounge and then headed to the museum. Here’s a sampling of what we saw there plus a few random Welt pictures:

When the end of the day came, I spent some time in the gift shop collecting the free swag we were given. The best part? Having my custom key chain engraved with my delivery date (nerd alert!). :)

BMW Welt European Delivery Program After that, we were off on a whirlwind tour of Germany, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Italy and Austria. Basically, I spent the entire time running back to my car and taking glamor shots of it….hahaha…

2012: Year of the Ballooned Spending?

Every year, I total up the amount I’ve spent during each month on miscellaneous expenses. For my budgeting purposes, “miscellaneous” includes anything that isn’t an auto-debited bill or debt payments. Essentially, that means things like gas, groceries, clothes and medical co-pays are lumped right in with concert tickets, meals out and vino (because life is definitely better with a bit of vino :) ) I also include a separate breakdown for all travel-related expenses.

Here’s how I fared for 2012, followed by a side-by-side view of 2011 vs. 2012 for the same categories:

2012 Miscellaneous Spending

2012 Miscellaneous Spending

A few notes:

The miscellaneous of the miscellaneous (not confusing at all, eh?) includes concert tickets, haircuts, furniture (I like to buy secondhand pieces and refinish them), marathon/race fees, random household expenses like cleaning supplies and paper products, birthday gifts, transit fees (tolls, taxis, subway passes) and a few other irregular expenses.

To keep myself on track, I enter each expense I incur on a separate line item, noting the purchase, date and total amount spent. Moving forward, I'd like to pare down this category so it's easier to have dedicated categories for all tracking purposes.

Blog/online expenses included the self-hosting and domain transfer for this blog as well as hosting and domain name purchases for my other budding online ventures. Condo expenses included all of my random DIY projects as well as installing crown molding in two rooms (by myself...woot, woot!).

The 'overages' category here is perhaps the worst, most embarrassing part of my budget this year--it's the total amount I went over from my $500/month miscellaneous spending budget. Ugh. Clearly this needs to change in 2013 as this is not a sustainable way to budget--these overages were recognized in the same month's budget, but they could have easily been avoided had I been better about spending. Onward and upward!

A few more notes:

As I detailed in my 2012 Hits and Misses post yesterday, I didn't end up going to Tanzania due to my marathon injury so all of that money was refunded to me and put back into savings. Acadia is my annual Labor Day camping trip, RTB is from running the Reach the Beach relay in the fall, Essex was a long weekend trip to the Essex culinary resort in Vermont and Sunday River was our holiday trip we just returned for (yay for friends having a family cabin so we stayed for free).

2011 vs. 2012

Now comes the ugly fun part--two years side by side!

2011-2012 Miscellaneous Spending

Thankfully, I did manage to reduce my miscellaneous of the miscellaneous spending and my meals out spending which were my two spending-related goals for 2012. But, I clearly have my work cut out for me in 2013! First up will be addressing the overage issue, then I'll tackle the meals out and gas expenses.

A few immediate changes for 2013 will include no pet-related expenses as my kitties are moving to a new home (difficult decision but look for a very exciting announcement that's related to their departure!), ideally no more car maintenance expenses as BMW covers all oil changes, brake pads, etc. for the first 50K miles, I will hopefully not lose my iPhone and therefore have no cell phones to buy and I'll have no blog-related expenses unless I decide to do another redesign because my hosting is paid through 2017.

Check back soon for a complete listing of my 2013 goals...

Do you track your miscellaneous spending? How did you fare in 2012?

$1400+ of Travel for $520

Discount Travel Tips I love to travel, and I’m always on the lookout for great deals on everything from flights and hotels to excursions and meals. From time to time, I’ve highlighted some of my great finds on this blog such as my trip to Greece where I scored the week-long lodging/ferry/meal package for $499, the trip to Colorado that cost just over $200, the castle tour of Ireland that included flights, cars and meals for two, and the list goes on. I’ve also listed my tips for how to make discount travel a reality no matter how tight your budget may be (some of these are the very tips I employed to make these current deals work for my interests and budget).

Over the past week, I’ve been on the hunt for some great travel options for 2013. In my quest to find deals that couldn’t be passed up and could make great gifts moving forward, I found the deals below. With a bit of creative budgeting and a whole lot of web surfing, I was able to fund nearly two full trips for two; one to Philadelphia and the other to Kauai.

The original cost of these pieces should have been $1,420.20. The total cost to me? $520.82.

A weekend in Philly for two for $171

For the trip to Philly, I capitalized on a JetBlue fire sale that ran when they introduced the new flights from Boston to Philly. The total cost—roundtrip including taxes—for the two of us ended up being $141.20. The current cost of the same flight for two is now $315.20.

When it came time for hotel arrangements, I happened to remember the $500 HotelClub gift credit I had won over the summer when J$ ran an awesome giveaway (Thanks again, J$!). At first, I thought the credit was just a bunch of junk as the hotels coming up in search results were priced far more than $500 for two nights. Remembering my own advice that patience is a virtue, I continued my search and eventually found a 4-star boutique hotel downtown that was covered completely with my credit.

HotelClub charged my $30.62 in taxes and fees but I scored a two-night upgraded reservation for Rittenhouse 1715. Based on their current loaded prices on their site, this reservation should have cost $478 (not including any additional taxes or fees)!

Island adventures for less than $350

For the Kauai trip, I again turned to my favorite discount travel site, TravelZoo (I’m definitely not paid to promote them, but I really should be…ha!). I’d taken a trip to Hawaii before using a TravelZoo deal for airfare back in 2008, but I had backpacked and stayed in hostels to keep expenses down.

This time, I was looking more for luxury and relaxation more than I was looking for a ‘roughing it’ experience. Score one for TravelZoo when I found a fantastic, 4-star resort offering a 3-night package for two. The original cost of the package? $627. Cost to me? $349.

Now of course there will be airfare expenses eventually added to the cost of this trip, but the deal was for a voucher that can be used anytime between now and June. I’ve come too far in my quest for financial independence to fall back into my extreme spending ways! But I’ll be certain to keep an eye out for additional airfare deals between now and then, and I’ll be booking only when I’ve found a discounted rate that fits the budget.

What travel deals have you found recently?
